Drafted by the Atlanta Hawks as the first overall pick in the 1975 NBA Draft, Thompson decided to play for the Nuggets instead. As an ABA rookie, he showcased his extraordinary skills and was named the league's Rookie of the Year.

During his time in Denver, he averaged 22.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. In 1982, he joined the Seattle SuperSonics, where he played for another season before retiring.
