Early Career and Dazzling Debut

Thompson's basketball journey began with the Denver Nuggets of the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1975. Drafted by the Atlanta Hawks as the first overall pick in the 1975 NBA Draft, Thompson decided to play for the Nuggets instead. As an ABA rookie, he showcased his extraordinary skills and was named the league's Rookie of the Year.

NBA Stardom and Record-Breaking Performance

Thompson continued his dominance after the ABA merged with the NBA in 1976. He established himself as a versatile player with an explosive offense and solid defense. On April 9, 1978, Thompson etched his name in NBA history by scoring a career-high 73 points against the Detroit Pistons, setting a Nuggets franchise record.

Nuggets Legacy and SuperSonics Tenure

Thompson spent eight seasons with the Denver Nuggets, becoming a fan favorite and a key contributor to the team's success. During his time in Denver, he averaged 22.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. In 1982, he joined the Seattle SuperSonics, where he played for another season before retiring.
