Black Actors Denounce Backlash Against Amewudah-Rivers
Francesca Amewudah-Rivers, a British actress and musician, has been cast as Juliet in a West End production of Shakespeare's classic play, Romeo and Juliet. However, her casting has been met with racist remarks and backlash online.
Over 800 Black women and non-binary actors have signed an open letter condemning the online racial abuse directed at Amewudah-Rivers. The letter, which was organized by the Black Theater Coalition, states that the abuse is "unacceptable and must be condemned."
Amewudah-Rivers, who is known for her work in "Bad Education" and "Minutes," has been praised for her talent and her commitment to diversity and inclusion. She is the first Black actress to play Juliet in a West End production of the play.
The Jamie Lloyd Company, which is producing the play, has expressed its support for Amewudah-Rivers and condemned the racist abuse she has faced. The company said in a statement that it is "proud to have Francesca as part of our cast and we will not tolerate any form of racism or discrimination."
